Nautical Charts and Lakes Data from Multiple Sources
Introduction
This article aims to answer the question how i-Boating produces high quality nautical charts and lake depths maps. We discuss everything from data sourcing to chart processing pipeline.
Nautical Charts and Lakes Data from Multiple Sources

i-Boating maps use data from hundreds of public and private sources. All of these feed into the i-Boating universal bathymetry database. These include but are not limited to:
- Government hydrographic offices
- Government nautical charts
- Public surveys
- Private surveys
- Sponsored surveys
- Notices to Mariners
- Satellite imagery
- Crowd Source Bathymetry
Multiple Different Layers
There are actually multiple different layers.
- Nautical Chart
- shorelines
- navigation aids
- ports
- channels
- hazards
- depth contours
- government/private chart information
- Relief Shading
- turns the bathymetric surface into a shaded 3D-like representation
- Satellite imagery
- shoreline and surface reference
- Merged with the water polygon to visually reveal shallow weed beds, visible rocks, boat ramps, docks, and beach points.
- Hi-Res Bathy (SonarChart
- high-resolution bathymetry
- sonar-derived contours
- Land Ownership & Access Overlays:
- Integrates public vs. private property boundary data around shorelines so boaters can easily identify public lake access sites, state park boundaries, and private shorelines.
- Fishing AI
- AI model that to identify fishing spots in an inland lake/waterbody.
- Tide & Currents
- Prediction model to do forecasts runs offline on the device
- Lake Temperature
- Marine Weather Forecasts
- Multiple Models
Refresh Pipeline
The refresh pipeline feeds off the universal bathymetry database to produce charts. It kicks in every time it detects a change. The change could be availability of new charts, updates, new bathymetry survey data. Its a fully automated optimized pipeline. It can figure out which charts are impacted by the update and refresh only those charts. The refresh pipeline is on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
